Patricia Claro was born in Santiago Chile, 1960.

She studied Design at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in 1978-1982.  From 1981 to 2009, she participated in workshops by various artists where she studied painting and engraving techniques. In 2003 she enrolled in the program of Visual Arts at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile which she graduated from in 2005.

The decision to study a second major (Visual Arts), after a long period of experimenting with different techniques, consolidated a stage of artistic and theoretic formation. This incited a painting and video work which lead to a new approach towards the theme of landscape. At the same time, this had been an unusual and independent path which lead her to adapt to a generational change and has enabled her to share projects with young emerging artists.

She is conducting a visual investigation on the theme of landscape and water as the infinite source of images. Her personal interpretation of this scenario in movement is the result of a rigorous experimental study of the dual quality of water and its reflections. She proposes new expressive possibilities, emphasizing her particular vertical view towards landscape, Using digital image as a reference capturing water movements, she starts a painting process in which details are eliminated in order to reach the essencial elements.

The final work is reconstructed as a whole, combining a meticulous manual technique with oil paint on linen and video elaboration which demonstrate the capacity of water to reflect the environment.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

"In my visual proposal the theme of landscape refers to water, the untouched waters in south of Chile, as the sole element of the image. This element, water, represents the other: landscape. Representing the world starting from an image is definitely cutting a piece of reality and remolding it through a creative process.

Water, lacking color, transforms into a screen through it's reflecting capacity and reveals the first visually mediated take on the surrounding. It would be as if it's look is naturally drawn to modernity. The image is already on a screen reflecting from the water, and the photographic shot recaptures this image.

This photographic image contains information and details that are not visible to naked eye observing the environment directly. And so begins a process where digital medias come to play which allow for a deconstruction of the image, that is later on reconstructed by paint through a meticulous manual technique related to the nature of water itself.. The dual nature of water is demonstrated through a separation between refracted light ( in the depth of water) and reflected light ( the masked figure ). The video plays with the infinite capacity of water to reflect the surrounding and also itself, in it's sate of continuous movement.

A vertical approach towards landscape allows me to work with the space between the surface and the depth, always in and from the water. It is through this fusion that my codification of nature manifests itself, using manual and technological methods, where the focus is the continuity from the moment an image is captured. It is a walk through the non pictorial place. I shift from the place to my landscape, to a post-landscape.

Water appears through the distortion of the reflected environment. Water movements cause the deformation of elements at it's surface and these sequences reveal it's presence, as it takes on colors which naturally doesn't have.

Visualization of the world, arises from the necessity of having an image, captured from reality, to be later on manipulated by paint or through video. These mediums allows me to rearrange information and translate part of our natural environment into a new format."
